“Strive not to be a success, but rather a value.” ~ Albert Einstein
Social media can be a fickle character. Liking. Unliking. Following. Unfollowing. Ever-changing algorithms. #thestruggleisreal
And then there are the endless questions as a business owner. Should I be on one platform or all of them? What should I post? When to post? Why am I posting? What’s the purpose? Is this going to help grow my business? And if so, how?
Today, I’d like to chat about my favorite platform with you – Instagram. I love this particular social media platform because it’s visual (as a photographer, that’s huge to me!), it’s easy to use, and it’s very easy to engage with others. So I thought I’d share some helpful tips I’ve learned about this fun way to interact with your ideal clients! I like to call these, The 3 E’s of Instagram 🙂 :
1️⃣ Exceptional Photos! Go ahead. Scroll the feeds of your fave businesses on Instagram and you’ll notice they all have at least one thing in common – amazing photography. And we’re not just talking about quality (although that’s important!). It’s the cohesive branding and consistent look of their photos that really stands out. They’ve taken the time to think about their business, their brand and their message. And their feed is chock full of images that all tell the same story. Investing in great photography for your business is key to really standing head and shoulders above your competition.
2️⃣ Engagement! Businesses that are successful on Instagram engage frequently and genuinely with their followers and other businesses they admire. They’re creating real conversations, with real people. And they do more than just try to sell you their products or services – they share thoughts, ideas, behind-the-scenes moments, inspiration, stories, and their own struggles and humanity. They share their real, authentic selves and they connect with their followers on a personal level. And if you really want to wow your followers, be of value to them by sharing helpful tips, DIY tricks, and other useful information for your audience, or do a fun giveaway just for them! We’ve all heard the saying that people do business with someone they know, like and trust – engaging authentically on Instagram (or any social media platform for that matter!) and being of value is a great way to do this with your audience!
3️⃣ Every Day Consistency! The businesses that are rocking their Instagram accounts are also posting every day (or at least most days). How often you should post is debatable, but most successful accounts are posting 1 – 3 times per day, spread out, and typically around the same time(s) each day. Of course, how frequently and when you post really depends on your ideal client’s online habits. But, you can figure out what works best for you and your business through trial and error, and tracking tools like Iconosquare. Again, this consistency will help you build trust with your audience.
Bonus Tip: Hashtags! What’s the big the deal with hashtags and why should I use them? Hashtags help your ideal clients find you! Let that sink in for a minute. Hashtags can be your best friend – but only when used and used properly. The number one tip I’ve learned about hashtags is: don’t use industry specific hashtags. You’re ideal client is not searching for those specific business hashtags. By using hashtags that your ideal clients use, you can help them find your work more easily. Take a look at your ideal clients profiles, see what hashtags they’re using. Then see what other businesses they follow, that may be similar to your business, to find out what hashtags those businesses are you using to attract the kinds of clients you want to attract. This will take some time and research, but it’s a great way to expand your reach and so worth it!
In short, your audience wants to look at gorgeous photos, while chatting with you, and getting to know you a little better every day. That’s it! And Instagram is so much more than just a numbers game – it’s about connecting with people, your people, every day. Naturally, if you’re engaging with them regularly and authentically, and you’re taking the time to really get to know them, you’ll attract more people who align with your business goals and vision, who want to do business with you. And you may even make a few friends along the way. 😉
