To the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time.” ~ Clara Ortega
My little sister is getting married in June.
I still can’t believe she’s old enough to be getting married! And two weekends ago, my mom and I threw her a Parisian-themed bridal shower. She’s always dreamed of going to Paris, so until she can make that bucket-list trip happen, we decided to bring Paris to her.
But before I show you all the goodness that was her bridal shower, I’d love to share a little behind-the-scenes of our family with you. Because we’re friends! You see, Sara is 8 years younger than I am, which may not seem like a big deal, but we’ve always lived nearly a decade apart. And for her whole life, she’s been my baby sister, the one with the golden curls and cheeky grin that’s always made my heart melt. Don’t just take my word for it though, here’s my proof!

She was the cutest, right?! 😍
When mom told me that I’d be getting my very own little sister to bring home, I almost couldn’t contain the excitement!! I was 7 years old and knew that I’d be the best big sister EVER! I desperately wanted her to be born on my birthday, but as luck would have it, she was born exactly two months prior. Later on, I was grateful we each had our own special days. 😉 We were, however, both born on the 20th of the month, on a Sunday, and at almost the same exact time – 10:18am and 10:20am. So that was good enough for me!
Of course, everything wasn’t always rainbows and sunshine. There were times when we fought like wild animals growing up. Our home was secluded on top of one of our beloved West Virginia mountains. With only one elderly couple for a neighbor, we never had neighborhood kids stopping by to play. And so it was just us girls, our little brother, Troy, and our parents. But it was an amazing way and time to grow up.
Oh man, these two were always a trip! (Family Archives)
As Sara started to walk and talk, I recall clearly how she always wanted to be doing what I was doing. She wanted to read when I was reading (even though she couldn’t read yet!), wanted to put on makeup when I started wearing it, and she wanted to be by my side constantly. At the time, I thought this was the worst.thing.ever!
Such a little lady! (Family Archives)
Fast forward several years and I learned the value of having a sister (and later on, a brother too) in my life, and that not everyone was fortunate to have siblings. I was blessed with such a special gift. I learned that a sister is someone who is born looking up to you, someone who thinks you can do no wrong, and someone who wants to be just like you. And that’s pretty powerful. I knew that I had a huge responsibility to do good, make the right decisions in life, set a good example, and be someone she could look up to and be proud of one day.
Watching The Herd play was a family tradition – and both Sara and Troy attended Marshall! Here we are in 2001 with former Coach, Bob Pruitt. (Family Archives)
As the years have passed, our bond has continued to grow. Being part of Sara’s wedding planning, activities and preparations is truly a dream for me. She stood by me on my wedding day when she was just 20 years old. Now I have the same honor 5 years later. And I know I’m going to be the best Matron of Honor EVER. Just like I knew I’d be the best big sister ever. At least I hope!
Now, for the photos from Sara’s very special, Parisian-themed bridal shower from this past weekend!! My mom and I had an absolute blast planning for this event and making sure every last detail was perfect! 🙂
A simple ‘Welcome’ sign greeted guests to Sara’s Parisian-themed bridal shower!
The games began as soon as guests arrived with the ‘Collect the Most Bling’ game and a catchy little rhyme to explain the fun.
Tables were set up so the guests could easily interact with one another the whole time!
Each guest received a ‘Thank You’ gift in the shape of either a bride or groom which included pink, white and gold assorted candies.
Parisian-themed napkins perfectly complimented these gorgeous custom-made napkin rings by the fabulous KD Occasions & Designs!
We DIY’d table runners to add a little flair to each table then added one of the Bride’s favorite elements – moss!
This gorgeous custom-made banner by KD Occasions & Designs honoring the Bride-to-Be was the centerpiece of the celebration!
No celebration is complete without a little stroll down memory lane. 😉
One of our family’s favorite parts of any party is the food – and this beautiful table setting was our best creation yet!
Festive custom-made food name tents by KD Occasions & Designs helped guests make their perfect selections! They also created these fun table cutouts, that included circles, locks and keys, bird cages, and intricately designed Eiffel Towers (my personal fave!)!
The best part of the food spread is always and forever the dessert table. 😍 The local donut holes were requested by the Bride and literally melted in your mouth! Needless to say, these were ALL gone by the end of the party. 😄
Every detail mattered to us, from photos around the room, to custom-made decor, to these little sparkly Eiffle Towers, which are actually Christmas tree ornaments that Sara and Michael can hang on their first tree as Husband and Wife!
A special place for guests to ‘shower’ the Bride with their thoughtful gifts – Mercí!
After all the food, games, and gifts, it was time for some fun in the glam photo booth!
And lastly, one of my favorite photos from the day – our mom, Sara, and I! 💖
I’m so grateful for the wonderful man, Michael, that Sara is marrying and for his amazing family, who already feel like part of our own family. Cheers to Sara and Michael!! May you have a life full of love, adventure and sweet moments to cherish forever!
A very special thank you to the wonderful ladies of KD Occasions & Designs, who were an absolute joy to work with!! They added the perfect touch of custom beauty to our day with the stunning banner and adorable cutouts and napkin rings. Their original design for our party has now turned into one they carry in their gorgeous Etsy shop – which means you can now enjoy the same decorations we had at the shower!! And if you’d love to connect with them on Social Media to see what they’re up to, you can find them hanging out on Facebook and Instagram.
